Design and Fabrication

Robin Willis27 Dec 2008 @ 09:18 PM

The crafty guys over at the Media Lab class I took this semester called Design and Fabrication. Not only were cool enough to video tape every class and post it, which proved to be super helpful, they wrote a script condensing the 52 hours of footage into 2 minutes. I think its a pretty rad video, but maybe I'm just a sucker for time lapse stuff. Check it out and look closely at the very end you can see me for a few frames presenting the pen plotter I built for the class. Which reminds me - if anyone has any unwanted or broken printers that have been sitting in a closet for too long, I am on the hunt for printer parts and would be more then happy to take them off your hands.

Another semester at school has kept me from making even one post this fall. So to recap all the posts I miss. Started writing at whyroots.org, built a printer, am addicted to the wire, was a geodesic dome for halloween, will be living in San Francisco in January and working at Blacksquare . So without further delay here is a taste of my studio project this year. A Building that supports more buildings.

Manifesto Excerpt

Why can’t a building anticipate the development of its surroundings?
Why can’t cities develop in vertical stages?

'Twenty years from now the South Boston Waterfront will be completely transformed from one that is characterized by highways, shipping yards and parking lots into a skyline of massive isolated towers, groups of towers each with their own logic and contained environments. Because creating a project on the same scale as these is not possible due to far restrictions and program briefing, I propose to create a building that serves as a foundation for a series of buildings to grow on top of it, reinforcing the density and interiorized urbanism that defines its surroundings through a series of smaller vertical increments.'

Dark Water 23

Heres a little piece I made while staying in New York around the same time as this one. I don't know what to think of these, they both definitely come from images in my head stuck from There Will Be Blood. While they have nothing to do with the earth bleeding or of greed it is something about the water being like silence you can only find in nature. I dunno I need some feedback. I have recently been finding all kinds of little graphic tidbits that I made a while back and forgot about so I will post those soon. I also just finished a design for the cover for an ep and am in the process of designing another. I will post those as soon as they come out.

I just read a truly insightful essay by James Corner called The Agency of Mapping: Speculation, Critique and Invention. It tought me alot about myself actually or at least made new connections between different things that I am interested in that I never before saw. It is from the book Mappings and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in space, time, media and little social people. I posted a little blurb on my classes shared MIT utopian blog about it.

Note: The portfolio link is broken if you want to look at my previous work go to myplaybin.com or to selfportrait.net - sorry I will get it straight soon, broken links are my nerdy pet peeve.
